Who are we?
The Swedish Scientists and Engineers Against Nuclear Weapons is a non-profit,
politically independent, non-governmental organization. Membership is open
to scientists and engineers who support our mission. The society is headquartered
in Stockholm, Sweden, with local chapters in Göteborg and Lund. Contacts
for these places are listed below.
Our mission
Our mission is to promote a global responsibility in terms of sustainable
technical and social processes throughout the world. We emphasise people-to-people
understanding, peace and security. We work for disarmament of nuclear arms
and other weapons of mass-destruction. Our long-term aim is a nuclear-weapon-free
world.
Our main tasks are
- To watch issues related to nuclear arms and proliferation of those.
In addition to this we watch the development in the area of biological
and chemical weapons as well as arms trade and arms development in general.
Our focus of attention is on destabilizing, destructive and inhuman weapons,
such as anti-personnel mines.
- To place the arms-related issues into the context of mechanisms for
conflict resolution, efforts for improved international understanding and
an extended concept of security.
- To relate the issues to the topics of environment and global resources.
There are important connections between conflicts and the usage of energy
and material resources. There are also connections between armament and
conflicts on one side and destruction of the environment on the other.
The level of usage of civilian nuclear energy greatly influences the chances
of minimizing future risks for proliferation of nuclear weapons and for
the possibility of achieving a nuclear weapons free world. Risks for sabotage,
leakage and smuggling of nuclear fuel are to be watched closely.
- To address ethical issues in the areas of science and engineering related
to the topics listed above.
Working Methods
This association is active in a field where many government and non-government
organizations operate. We strive to find our special role in this context
and as far as possible coordinate with others. We want to exploit new methods
for mass communication, especially those which utilize international networks.
The specific profile of this association is the expertise of its member
community in the scientific and technical fields. Through their professional
contacts the members also have openings into international channels of
communication and cooperation.
The association can therefore:
- Acquire knowledge about development within the areas of sciences which
relate to the problem area of nuclear armament and other weapons for mass
destruction. Such knowledge is obtained from universities, technical cooperation
and international contacts.
- Disseminate this knowledge within our own group, that is our association
and cooperating organizations.
- Convert this information into politically useful recommendations for
suitable actions.
Affiliations
We are affiliated to the Swedish Professionals Against Nuclear Arms,
together with physicians, lawyers, psychologists and many other groups
of professionals. We are a member organization of INESAP
(International Network of Engineers and Scientists Against Proliferation)
and INES (International
Network of Engineers and Scientists for Global Responsibility).
Current Projects
In cooperation with INESAP and with support from the Ministry for Foreign
Affairs and the Swedish Research Council (FRN), we have organized an international
conference on the theme "From Nuclear Disarmament Towards a Nuclear
Weapon Free World" in May-June 1996. The proceedings from this conference
are currently being processed.
A conference on the environmental and technosocial situation related
to radiological risks in the Murmansk and Archangelsk area was arranged
in cooperation with Umea University in November 1996.
We also continuously monitor and report on issues related to non-proliferation,
nuclear testing, weapons of mass-destruction, nuclear waste and radiation
hazards and conversion of military industry.
An ongoing project is the publication of a quarterly newsletter (in
Swedish) to our members.
