Protest against Indian nuclear weapons test
The five Indian nuclear test explosions in May 1998 have aroused very strong feelings among the general public. They damage the network of international agreements intended to be building stones towards a nuclear-weapon-free world. But the responsibility for what has happened must be shared by many partners.
1. We regret and strongly protest against the nuclear tests made by India and urge India to refrain from any further steps in that direction. A regional arms race must be prevented before it gets out of hand.
2. We appeal to all nuclear threshold states, like Pakistan and Israel, to abolish their nclear weapons programs. Such programs will diminish the security of all states. Indeed, states which posess nuclear weapons may themselves become targets of nuclear agression.
3. We accuse the established nuclear-weapon-states of keeping their nuclear strategies and development programs despite a widespread awareness of the inutility of these weapons. The United States and Russia should take the lead in nuclear arms reductions. The world cannot survive in the long run with the risk of nuclear war by accident or by terrorist action.
